Veronica Mars: Goodbye, TV; Hello, Movie or Comics?

Will Veronica Mars return in a new form?We have to confess that some folks around CW Source Central were clinging to the hope of a last-minute reprieve for our tiny blonde hero – maybe the sugar rush from all those candy bars and marshmallows would make the network realize its mistake! Alas, we'll just have to take series creator Rob Thomas's word for it: "It's over for good as a television series."

Thomas does go out of his way to absolve CW president Dawn Ostroff from blame: "At the end of the day [CW president] Dawn Ostroff doesn't get to make the final call. Hers is an important voice in the room. But they're the little sister company of CBS. There was a pretty strong feeling that [CBS head] Les Moonves didn't want to do the show."

We kind of wish we could hear something from the suits behind this decision – Why the big "Is it dead? Could it come back?" drama if the decision was already made? We can't help but agree with this comment Thomas made to Blogcritics Magazine: "In a way, a clean 'they're cancelled' would have been less painful. I mean, less painful for me and less painful for the fans, I think."

Thomas' interview with BlogCritics is actually sort of heartbreaking. Consider this: "Sometimes I do believe that 'critical darling, commercial flop' will be on my tombstone. I feel really confident that I can consistently do good television. I have yet to know whether I can write hit television." Aw….

To cheer Rob Thomas (and ourselves) up, we're going to focus on the positive. For example, while Veronica and Co. won't be back to the CW, they may live on in other media. According to Zap2it, Thomas told the folks at the Banff World Television Festival that yes, he is considering shopping around a Veronica Mars screenplay. Even more intriguing to some of our geek-flag-flying members is this news: "I had a meeting with DC Comics last Monday and they want to do [Season 4] as a comic series."

Now that could be interesting – and it's not the first time a CW show would spawn a comic. DC division Wildstorm publishes Supernatural: Origins, the story of John Winchester raising the boys and hunting demons after Mary's death.

It's also nice to know that some of out favorite actors form the show are keeping busy. In addition to lending her voice to the Gossip Girl pilot, Kristen Bell is working on two movies: "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," where she plays the titular TV star and ex-girlfriend, and "Flatland: The Movie." Meanwhile, Enrico Colantoni is starring in "Sherman's Way," an indie comedy about a washed-up Olympic athlete on a road trip with an uptight Ivy League student. He's also appearing as Enrico the Chef in the upcoming comedy/thriller "Homeland Security" and filming his role as Celine Dion's manager/husband Rene in a TV biopic.

What do you think? Do you wish the network had canceled Veronica outright rather than dragging the process out? Would you read a Veronica Mars comic, or are you more interested in the actors than the characters? Do any of the movie Kristen and Enrico are filming sound interesting to you? Let us know in the comments!

After the CW cancelled Veronica Mars, I completely stopped watching the channel. I think it was a huge mistake for the CW to cancel such a great program.

As far as comic book or movie...I love the actors as much as the characters and would love to see a Veronica Mars movie, but I would definitely read a comic book to get some closure.

Veronica Mars was one of my favorite shows of all time!

I would love a movie. The way the series ended was so disappointing! Even Dawson's Creek got a two hour series finale....!

Why has RT gave up on it i never understood this so CBS doesnt want it why not pitch to fox or NBC or ABC??

Nobody cares about CW it shoulda been on a REAL network.

TV today sucks, you Ax out good shwos liek VM and recplace with crap liek pussycat dolls or Survivor XXXIII: lost in space or something.

I would rather see a movie then a comic book, first of all because I wouldn't be able to read the comic books where I live and second, I love the show not only because of the characters but also because of the actors. Because the actors are what make the show as good as it is, or rather, was. So, I'm really hoping for a movie.

WFT is wrong with this sation!!!!

It really sucks that Veronica Mars is gone. It was one of my favorite shows that I watched regularly and the CW goes and cuts it. To top it off they Gilmore Girls are gone too. There is nothing to watch of the CW anymore, I might as well stop watching the CW all together. And now they're coming out with dumb shows like palm somthing rather that I am sure will have zero ratings. It just seems really stupid. Oh well what can we do, maybe someday the CW will realize its mistakes.

"Aliens in America" are you kidding? What kind of idiot is running this station now? You went and canceled two of the best shows that were on you station for what, more reality crap like there isn't enough of that on every other station!! Veronica Mars & The Gilmore Girls were great shows and let me guess you are to cheap to pay them what they are worth. Well my condolences to the CW11, because right now you officially suck ass!!!!!!!!

good show with a great star... I just discovered she was in the musical version of "Reefer Madness," and was stunned at how versatile she is... drama, comedy, singing, dancing - and very easy on the eyes! hope to see more good projects from her...

I, like many others am disgusted with CW. You continue to show garbage like Top Model and cancel Veronica Mars, and actually GOOD show?

I hope Veronica Mars continues in the way of Firefly, and has a movie. It deserves that much.

A sad fact: I have started watching Lifetime regularly because they have better shows than the CW now.

I hate the CW. They took off all the good shows and is currently airing lamee shows in my opinion, like Hidden Palms and Gossip Girl which will be airred this fall.. I think. I'm not sure, but I don't feel like that's going to be a good show. And trust me,, I have good judgments. Mann.. I miss the WB.

-Hidden Palms
-V Mars
-OTH mid-season show

all very good, worth watching shows replaced with garbage shows like

-aliens in America
-The Reaper

CW, i hope they flop and all you guys loose your jobs.(well only the people who pick what shows get aired and canceled)

I'm so disgusted with the CW and CBS (which is the parent company) that I've deleted both channels from my tv. I will no longer watch either station. I'm tired of good shows getting canceled and replaced with mindless garbage. These tv executives couldn't find their butts even if you super glued their hands to 'em...yet their making the (horrible) decisions of what to put on tv. I'd like to meet the buffoon who decided to cancel VM and put on Farmer gets a wife. Wow! That'll be a stimulating show. Great job of contributing to the dumbing down of America. Give yourselves a pat on the back for putting more bad role models on tv.

I am so upset. All the good CW shows are ending. First it was Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven. In the same day, I found out that two shows that I love to watch-Hidden Palms (a new series) and Veronica Mars-are ending. I am very disappointed that all of these shows have ended.

It sucks that the show was "canceled" in that way. It was a great show and it didn't deserve to be ended/canceled like that. It would have just been better to be straightforward about the whole situation rather than go around the bush this whole time. The network is only showing how immature and unprofessional it is. Most likely I would not buy the comics because it is not the same thing. Most people are visual learners and it would not make as much sense. Hopefully a miracle could make the show come back but who are we kidding........

i really think they should have just told us it was over back in may when they decided. i also think that the CW needs to learn a thing or two about how to end a very popular series. putting a leading character in jail and just showing us the headline - that just doesn't cut it. and yet the pussycat dolls gets another season... a show that probably only got viewers in the first place because VM was on hiatus. this new network sucks. can we please have the WB and UPN back? they were so much better split up!

Veronica Mars was surely an unique twist on t.v. however, the series was getting a bit predictable. I think moving up is always a smart and courageous move. I wish you luck in all your new ventures! XO, MalibuBarkie.com

I'm going to miss all you guys!!!!! I loved the show so much and now i have nothing! And i would perfer a show over comics because it isn't the same. I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS!!!

I love Veronica Mars. It is going to heart me knowing that I am not going to see it next seaeson.

Why you're not posting the comments you receive from supernatural fans??
You made an entry asking for our opinions and now you're rejecting every post?
Not really nice, but now the word is out that you are rejecting comments.

omg i miss Veronica Mars.... How could this show be over when it's sooo good ? :(

I wish I was a Veronica Mars fan.
At least the show is cancelled and not completely destroyed like Supernatural.
Instead I'm a Supernatural fan and I have to watch my favorite show while it's ruined forever by the CW.

I LOVE Veronica Mars!!! It was the best show the CW had, and they totally screwed it up now! There's nothing left for me on the CW! This is completely unfair and the show definately deserves a longer run! I must admit though, I may not buy the comics. To me, Kristin Bell will always be Veronica Mars, and we all know it's not true V.Mars without Enrico Colantoni!!! I'll miss this show SOOOOOO much!!!

I CANT BELIEVE VERONICA MARS IS BEING CANCELED!!! that was the best show on the cw. i don't even think i'll watch the new shows, because none of them even look good. first, it was gilmore girls, now this!!! i am giving up the cw for LIFE!!! i am not even exaggerating. veronica mars was what was getting me through gilmore girls being canceled, at least i still had veronica mars. a comic is a dumb idea, it won't be the same. comics just can't make me feel scared that veronica is about to get raped, or that she finally figured out who killed the dean. no comic would EVER live up to what veronica mars the show was.

Love you miss you Veronica Mars. Your show was new fresh and totally cool. I will read the comics and cant wait for the movie (fingers crossed)!!!! I Wish it was a yes/ no answer instead of a "its dead, but not" answer. No hard feelings, though.Totally feeling a hole in my tv heart gilmore girls and Veronica Mars tuesdays nghts will never be the same!!!
