Beauty and the Geek Returns -- What Did You Think?

Beauty and the Geek is back and we have to admit, we’re not sold on the new format. One of the reasons we love the show is that you get to see these unlikely bonds forming between seemingly mismatched people – think Shay and Joshua from last season, or Mario and Nadia from Season Three. Both beauties and geeks take pride in their partner, help them stretch and grow. How is that going to happen this season?

Instead, it looks like we’ve already got rivalries between the beauties with no one to stand as a buffer between the personalities. What was up with the fight between Randi and Amber? It just came out of nowhere!

The geeks, as usual, are a little better bonding with and support each other. And yes, we’ve got some serious geekery this season – including an oceanographer, a poet of sorts, and a particularly shaggy video game programmer who tends to get all deer in the headlights when confronted with another human being. But other geeks – specifically sweater-vested Tommy, momma’s boy Jonathan and Microsoft addict John – didn’t seem all that geeky to begin with. Buff geek Jason and cowboy geek Joe were somewhere in the middle.

And then there’s Greg, the one geek who seems to have been adopted by the beauties. He’s the official Beauty mascot, who treat him like an adorable little gay teddy bear. We have to admit, we think he’s pretty cuddly, too.

The beauties are a little less differentiated to us. We’re hoping their personalities come out a bit more in upcoming episodes.

Actually, the beauties had to rely on personality in the first challenge. They got makeunders, and had to join the geeks in trying to get phone numbers from strangers. And apparently, they’ve got some personality to spare, because they ended up getting the most real numbers. That means they got to send five geek to the elimination room, where they competed in a rapid-fire elimination quiz. John was the last man standing, and he got the boot.

What did you think of the episodes? Were the makeunders a good idea or just an exercise in schadenfreude? Who’s your favorite so far? What do you think of the new format? Tell all in the comments!

Based on last night's premiere numbers, only 1.88 million viewers, it looks as though tweaking the experiment bombed.
