Supernatural: Just Like the Good Old Days!

We have to admit we're a bit torn about this episode of Supernatural: On the plus side, it goes back to one of those monster-of-the-week, bring-the-funny, seriously disgusting cases that we love so well. On the minus side, um, dude, Apocalypse? Who cares about James Dean's killer car? And just like our hearts weren't really in it, it seemed like the boys were going through the motions, too. So -- was their sort-of-off performance a sophisticated take on the discombobulations they feel, or was it just kind of a not-great episode?

What Worked:

The Ick
OK, we're STILL squicked out by the windshield-sliced-halfway-through-the-guy's-FACE image, but that was just the beginning of the EW! How about Sam fishing around in a corpse's stomach (thank you, foley artist for those squelching noises...) or Sam's face liberally spattered with Paris Hilton's blood? THey seriously brought the ick this week!

The funny
The show was having WAY too much fun with the various wax-sculptures-turned killers. From "Si! El Presidente Lincoln!" to man-of-peace Gandhi trying to munch on Sam's neck, we were giggling. Then there were the lines:

"Hey, world's smallest violin, pal. I spent the day up Christine's skirt. I needed a drink."

"Gandhi, the real Gandhi ..." "Spit it out!" "He was a fruitarian." "Let me get this straight -- your ultimate hero was not only a short man in diapers, but he was also a fruitarian. Even for you, that is good!"

"They're unlike any other seed I've ever seen before, Dean." "Wow, just when I thought you couldn't get any geekier...."

"You can't eat me. I've never even seen House of Wax!"

Hee!

There's more -- keep reading after the break!

Paris Hilton
We know! We didn't think we'd be saying it either! But having the embodiment of vapid fame chastising humanity for our current Culture of Celebrity actually worked. Check out these lines:

You used to worship gods, but this? This is what passes for idolatry? Celebrities? What have they got besides small dogs and spray tans? ... You people used to have old-time religion. Now you have US weekly.

Not bad. And kudos to Hilton for mocking herself!

The Relationship
Dean wanted this to be a straight-up, normal case... but he still doesn't trust Sam. And Sam knows it. So we had some very real jockeying for position between the brothers. But then there was the end, when Sam laid out a problem that we could understand -- he always feels like Dean's little brother, in part because Dean keeps treating him that way. They can't go on like that! And finally, Dean agrees. What's more, he admits his role in starting the apocalypse (which will make at least some of our commenters happy...), and agrees to make a change. He even lets Sam drive. Holy crap!

What Didn't Work (for us...)

The funny
Was it just us, or did all the quippery seem... forced? Like the boys (or maybe the writers) were desperately trying to lighten the mood, pretend nothing was happening, and hope that we went along for the ride. Last season's angsty, suicidal teddy bear worked for us. A growling Abe LIncoln? Not so much.

Paris Hilton
Yes, it was great meta commentary. But oof, girlfriend can't act.

The turn-on-a-dime
That's it? That's all it takes to get Dean to come around after YEARS of treating Sam like a kid? One speech, and we're good? We're not quite buying it. Likewise, we think Sam's last speech -- "We've just gotta grab on to whatever's in front of us, kick its ass and go down fighting" -- was supposed to be a rousing battle cry. Again, it just left us scratching our heads -- was that really all it took? Huh.

The Tease
Don't dangle the prospect of Jeffery Dean Morgan in front of us and then snatch it away! That's just mean!

But enough about us -- What did YOU think? Talk about it in the comments!

I'm sorry, but I'm really amused by all of these commenters who keep yelling about how Sam doesn't place any of the blame on himself. Are we watching the same show here? All Sam DOES is blame himself! Goodness gracious... In 5.03, Sam said, "I did it. I started the Apocalypse." In the first episode, Sam tells "Bobby" that everything is his fault. In this episode, Sam's telling Dean that he knows everything is his fault, and he's trying to work through it, but Dean needs to treat him like an adult. Do you guys just fly on past these lines? I'm so baffled by you adamant Sam-haters.

i thought the episode was hilarious and heartwarming (with Dean letting Sam drive) but im getting tired of sams BS toward Dean! The show is amazing, my favorite dont get me wrong but Sams been throwing pity parties for himself since season 1! ugh!

I don't think things are resolved at all. Actions speak louder than words. Dean is going to have to treat Sam like an adult and not just say he will.

I don't think the episode was as bad as some people make it out to be. Yeah, I was a little put off at the ending scene, but I think that's how it was suppose to be. I don't think Dean is giving in that easily. It's in his blood to basically be Sam's guardian. That's never gonna change.

Paris was okay and I got a good laugh out of all the one-liners and Gandhi attacking Sam.

I think this was a nice break from all the heavy angst of the previous episodes.

One more thing the whole, "Let's pretend that we are sneaking Jeffrey Dean Morgan in without the fans so much as getting a whiff of it ahead of time" Just MEAN! lol
I hope that seeing how the fans react to the almost appearance of John Winchester will illustrate to the show runners how much we love and miss our favorite deceased character.

Wow, for fans they sure do complain a lot.
This was hardly the best episode ever but it was a welcome reprieve from all of the heavy Apocalyptic agenda of late. And although I am not a fan of Ms Hilton and her whole... "thing", I think she did quite well, and what a great sport to allow herself to made fun of- bravo!
I too was highly put off being Dean's McJerk attitude toward Sam in the middle of the episode, which in turn caused me to feel vindicated by Sam's reactionary speech. In the end, the brothers realized what we have known all along- as a team they are solid. But every relationship has to change in order to grow.
I give this installment a 7 out of 10.

Watched this episode again. Still hated it!!!

This is the same old crap. Sam screws up (in more ways than one), Dean is hurt and angry, Sam finds a way to shift blame onto Dean, Dean caves, Sam goes back to acting like an infallable know it all. Wash, rinse, repeat! Sam doesn't have to change, grow up or take any real responsibility for himself. If Sam is ever going to be taken seriously as an adult, he has to stop doing this and Dean needs to stop enableing Sam and demand some respect for himself for once. I'm quite sure he has earned it.

I have given up on Sam taking any accountability for all of the crap that he did to Dean last season. The worse part is that he doesn't even think that he has to.

The writers confirmed that Sam already knew that Dean broke the first seal. They had already alluded to that before, but I'm glad that they clarified it for the viewers who weren't sure.

Anyway I give this ep an F!

Dean is agreeing, sure, but I suspect it's going to take a lot of time before he's able to really DO what Sam asked of him. He's been Sam's mother, father and brother since he was four years old! It's going to take Sam reminding him over and over before he accepts Sam as an equal adult partner. Wait and see. As for Sam's speech at the end, it reminded me a lot of Dean's. These two are facing a lot of very difficult problems that will require both of them--their intellect, cunning, hunting skills, ability to read each other's minds, trust, and above all, love. The Colt won't kill Lucifer, the only bullet that will penetrate evil that deep is comprised of the love and trust Sam and Dean share. Period.

This episode was crap.

Dean was passive aggressive and Sam was a petulant whiney brat who still doesn't own his own crap.

Sam gets to complain, tell Dean how much he sucks, not take accountability for EVERYTHING he has done or for his life long flaws, shift blame, spout off hypocrytical double talk and give vague blanket apologies that aren't even sincere half the time (hello Assylum, Metamorphises and Good God Ya'll). Sam hasn't changed one bit!!!! Do the writers think that whitewashing Sam's behavoir (AGAIN) does the characters any favors? I feel sorry for Jared for having to spew this crap.

Though, passive agressive Dean is not my favorite form of the character, I don't deny his right to feel angry, hurt, betrayed and mistrustful. Apparently Sam and the writers don't agree. So it's back to placating the whiney brat and burying his own feelings as well as sublimating his own needs. Dean is still the family scapegoat and crutch.

For the record I do think that Dean uses the older brother card on occasion, but Sam uses the little brother card just as often to get his way. Plus Sam can be just as bossy and way more controlling than Dean ever thought of being. Because for Sam it's about the power and control, for Dean (who is ego free) it's about trying to do what is in the best interest of everyone.

Meh, didn't like this episode at all, really; the MOTW elements were lame (since when does Sam do his own autopsies, wouldn't the ME have already found those seeds? And you can't tie unconscious people to trees STANDING UP; they're unconscious, for God's sake, how are they gonna stand up?!). And the interplay between the boys and their heart-to-heart talks were just so clunky and uneven; I get the intent behind it, but the actual writing was not good. And excuse me, but Dean's revelation to Sam that he opened the first seal in Hell should have been a PIVOTAL moment between the boys regarding their relationship and the whole Apocalypse, but we only get one throwaway line referencing it and were deprived of what could have been a wonderful scene between the brothers. I HATE that. This episode was very disappointing; in the end, Paris was definitely NOT the worst thing to worry about, she didn't even do that bad of a job comparatively.

I'm surprised with how well Paris' acting was. In House of Wax it was pretty bad.

I don't know if anyone from the CW reads these but where are the Smallville newsletters like these????

I can't believe they asked Paris Hilton to be in SuperNatural. That girl can't act.

I thought this episode might have been the best of the season so far.

Sam and Dean finally had a discussion like adults, Dean finally admitted his own culpability in all this instead of blaming it all on Sam, Sam stood up for himself and made it clear to Dean that being treated like his lapdog was not going to be good for them.

I thought by the end they had both matured massively, and even better it had no Castiel, I feel that character has been completely forced on fandom lately and I for one was thrilled not to have even a mention of him.

Just the brothers is the relationship I want to see and we got it in spades. Dean showed his talents for cars, Sam for Spanish, they were both clever, switched on and I was proud of them both.

it seemed out of character for dean to resolve things that quickly. maybe it would have felt a little more natural if dean had first explained to sam what he saw 5 years in the future? i don't know. i always felt that dean's problem with sam wasn't that he started the apocolypse, but that sam abandoned his brother and chose a demon over him. but the conclusion of this episode made it seem as if dean's big problem with sam was that he had started the apocolypse, which makes dean seem hypocritical. i liked the episode itself, i just felt that the last scene was too rushed and too tidy of a conclusion. i don't think sam should just be let off the hook that easily

Yah, the teasing was mean.
