7:00am:
An acne drug that has shown early promise in treating Lou Gehrig's Disease might actually worsen it.

And new research shows that silicone breasts might not increase the risk of cancer, after all.

Good news this morning for women who have silicone gel breast implants. A new study finds they do not increase the risk of cancers, connective tissue diseases, or other serious chronic diseases.

According to the report a team of researchers evaluated more than a dozen studies that looked at the implants and the potential diseases they can cause and found =consistently= no evidence that they cause any type of cancer or connective tissue diseases like fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis... Or neurological diseases like m-s.

What about the risk of suicide?

Suicide has been consistently reported among women with breast implants. And the question has always been... Which came first? Was there psychiatric illness before the implants or did this develop after? For that, researchers are recommending more studies to answer that question.

There's also some disappointing news for people with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

That's right.. A new study finds that an acne drug that had shown some early promise in treating Lou Gehrig's Disease actually makes it worse.

The report is from the journal lancet neurology. It found that minocycline has a harmful effect of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS which is the medical name for Lou Gehrig's Disease. Unfortunately there's no cure for a-l-s. Doctors still don't know exactly what causes it. ALS is a motor neuron disease where people slowly become paralyzed. Most die within 5 years.

Finally, we literally need to get off our butts!

We do if we want to fight disease and stay healthy! And despite my pleading just about every morning on this show.. Apparently some of you folks still aren't getting the message.

A new study finds only 28 percent of Americans exercise regularly.. And researchers say that means about 60 percent of the population is at risk for diseases that are associated with a sedentary lifestyle... Which kill a quarter of a million Americans each year. Some of the diseases include type-two diabetes, arthritis, breast cancer, colon cancer and osteoporosis. So get off your butt. And do some exercise.

8:00am:
A landmark report this morning is strongly linking obesity to cancer.

The international panel of experts reviewed more than 7 thousand large scale studies over 5 years and found that excess body fat increases the risk of cancer of the kidneys, colon, pancreas, esophagus, uterus and breast after menopause. The researchers say all that excess fat doesn't just sit on us doing nothing. It's actually metabolically active tissue that produces substances that promote the development of cancer.

I'm sure diet must play an important role in this. It does. In fact, researchers say processed meat is a key contributor to the problem. Every 1 point 7 ounces of processed meat that you eat a day increases the risk of colon cancer by 21 percent. They recommend eliminating processed meats like ham, sausage, bacon and lunchmeat completely from your diet. They also say you should limit red meat consumption to less than 18 ounces a week... And cut back on salt and foods that are high in added sugar and fat.

Speaking of cancer, there's some disturbing news about brain cancer. Tell us about that.

This is one of those studies that grabs you and you just say. Wow! Dutch researchers say one in 60 older people may be walking around with Benign brain tumors and not even know it. They may also have bulging Blood vessels in the head that could rupture. Most of these problems don't cause any symptoms but some can be life threatening. They're not recommending screening for everyone.. But if you are found to have one of these conditions your doctor may urge you to get treated.

Finally, we always report on stories about public schools that provide birth control to students.. How do people feel about that?

It's a very controversial issue. Some people say providing birth control encourages kids to have sex. Others say preaching abstinence and sex education is not enough.

According to a new poll most people favor letting their public schools provide birth control to students. Overall, sixty-seven percent of people surveyed support giving contraceptives to students and 62 percent - said they believe providing birth control reduces the number of teenage pregnancies. Having said that 37 percent of the people who say it's ok to give contraceptives to kids say you should get parent's consent.

What's the trend these days with teen pregnancy?

Teen pregnancy rates have dropped to about 75 per 1,000 people. That's down from a 1990. That's not to say kids are not having sex. About half of teenagers aged 15 to 19 report having had sex at least once, and almost 750,000 of them a year become pregnant. Interestingly.. Minorities, older folks and lower-income people were more likely to require parental consent for birth control in school.. But white people and those in higher income brackets did not want schools to provide birth control at all.
