7:00am Segment Info:
If you're a parent and you try to get your kids to eat healthy, you know how tough it can be. Now federal lawmakers are considering a national ban on selling candy, sugary soda and salty, fatty food in school snack bars and vending machines.

They're proposing legislation that will offer what they consider to be the best chance to get control of the mountain of high-calorie snacks and sodas available to school children because leaders in the food and beverage industry have had a hand in creating the new standards. Cafeteria food is a separate issue that is controlled by the department of agriculture.

What would be allowed?

7:00am Segment Info:
If you've ever had a really stuffy nose you probably noticed that those over the counter cold medicines don't do much to help you breathe. Now the FDA agrees. They say there's little proof that phenylephrine. The active ingredient in those medicines can open your nasal passages. The agency says most of the studies were done in the 60's and 70's. Were small and poorly designed. In fact, seven out of 14 studies of the drug did not show a significant improvement in nasal airflow at the currently used dosage.

Phenylephrine is now behind the counter in drug stores. You don't need a prescription, but you have to ask for it... Right?

Dr. Steve: Wednesday

Fit For Life Segment Info:
A new study says people over 60 who exercise will live longer than their peers regardless of their weight.

Researchers from the university of South Carolina say overweight people who exercise have a lower risk of death than their out-of-shape counterpart even if they happen to be thin.

And more research suggests that antibiotics may NOT help fight sinus infections. A recent British study showed people with sinus infections improved within two weeks, even if they didn't take a standard antibiotic or nose spray. Amoxicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for sinus infections. But researchers say doctors may need to reconsider treatments.

Ohio state university medical center has been using the wii for about four months to help people recover from strokes and spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries. It's also being used in Canada. Doctors say the video game can help patients build balance, coordination, endurance and upper and lower body strength.

Janice Dickinson

janicedick.jpg

She was once a judge on America's Next Top Model, and now she’s promoting Season 3 of the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. Janice said that beauty isn't the only thing a model must have, in addition, one needs a big helping of the X-Factor - something Janice knows all to well given her charisma and ability to make even the heartiest of stagehands & crew blush like teenagers, which she did handily this morning on our set. And, she loves Suki, too, just watch for yourself...

7:00am Segment Info:
There's been a lot of discussion in the press these days about Mitt Romney’s faith. But did you know that Mormon’s have a lower risk of heart disease? Doctors used to think it was because they don't smoke, but new research finds that fasting occasionally, something Mormon’s apparently do, can lower your risk of heart disease. They say people who fasted once a month were about 40 percent less likely to develop heart disease compared to those who do not fast.

Can fasting be dangerous?

Cholesterol lowering drugs are very popular these days, and with so many people taking them. There is a push by drug companies to try to make them available over the counter. In fact, Merck. The company that makes Mevacor wants to sell a low dose version of the drug without a prescription.

The FDA believes the drug can be safe and effective over the counter. But the agency is concerned that the wrong people will take the drug. The company has asked twice before.. I'll let you know what the final decision will be.

Botox and restalyn are all the rage these days as women and men try to erase the fine lines and wrinkles that come from aging.

There's a new trend that has aging babyboomers smiling. Facial acupuncture. Acupuncturists say strategically placing needles in certain areas of the face can make it look younger, smoother, and healthier by relaxing the muscles and tissues in the face. The holistic approach appeals to those who don't want to have surgery or inject chemicals.

Is it expensive?
