In today's fit for life, researchers say a husband and wife are to blame for a form of hereditary colon cancer in the United States.

Using a genetic fingerprint, scientists were able to trace the mutation back to a couple who sailed from England to America in the 1630's.the couple's descendant's branched out over generations...and are currently part of two large families living in Utah and New York.

It's important to note that less than one percent of colorectal cancer cases in the U.S., are due to this particular genetic mutation.

And women who have miscarriages in their second trimester are at high risk of miscarrying a second time.

A new report shows that women who are pregnant for the first time, and lose their baby...have a 27% chance of suffering two miscarriages.

When you go for a surgical procedure you always ask about side effects, risks, that sort of thing.

However, if you're 60 or over, you may want to ask about how the operation will affect your memory. A new study finds people over the age of 60 who undergo elective surgery may be at higher risk of lasting memory problems. The report looked at over a thousand patients, and found that after three months nearly 13 percent of those over 60 had problems with brain function and memory. Generally about 30 to 40% of older people can have these problems, but this number, about 13% lasted longer than three months, and they were more likely to die within the first year after surgery.

How can you know if you're at risk for this problem?

By skipping salmon, one of the foods highest in heart-protective omega-3 fatty acids, and green tea, with its cancer-fighting antioxidants, are we short changing our health? This seems to be a major concern lately. That's why food companies have pumped new products full of disease-fighting compounds identical to those found in some of the world's healthiest fare. A happy heart is a healthier one. A study of nearly 3,000 British people showed those who were in good moods had lower levels of high blood pressure and stress. Those people with positive attitudes also had less inflammation in the body.

And a consumer group is suing the food and drug administration for poor warning labels on some antibiotics. The public citizen group says the FDA needs stronger warning labels for the side effects caused by Cipro. Right now the label is at the bottom of each bottle, where it's hard to see. Serious tendon injuries can result from taking the antibiotic. The group is calling for a "black-box" warning label, which will make the side effect more noticeable.

It seems more and more kids these days are suffering from allergies, and pediatricians often tell women with a family history of food allergies to avoid things like nuts, eggs, and cow's milk while breastfeeding. Well that may be changing.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics breast feeding helps prevent baby's allergies, but there's no good evidence to suggest that women should avoid certain foods during pregnancy. Soy formula for babies is probably ok, and there's no reason to delay the introduction of solid foods to your baby longer than six months after birth. Having said that if you have a significant family history for allergies, you want to speak to your pediatrician about this report before introducing any foods to your child.

In other news, you've got a really good reason to get to the gym.

If you're nervous or anxious all the time, you may be increasing your risk of heart attack, at least for men anyway.

A new study published in the journal of the American College of Cardiology found that men who were chronically anxious were 30% to 40% more likely to have a heart attack than more easygoing guys. And this connection still held up after considering other heart risk factors like high cholesterol or smoking & things like that.

Does this mean that doctors need to prescribe more than just drugs to prevent heart disease?

There's potential good news for people fighting the battle of the bulge.

A new study found that an experimental weight-loss drug that suppresses the appetite and speeds up metabolism helped people lose weight. The drug is called Taranabant. It was developed by Merck. It works by blocking cannabnoid receptors. They're the same pleasure centers in the brain that are triggered when marijuana smokers get hungry. Those who took the 6-milligram dose every day for 12 weeks lost about 11 pounds. They also followed a reduced-calorie eating plan but had no specific exercise plan. Taranabant is in the same class of drugs as Rimonabant, also known as Acomplia, which is not approved by the f-d-a but it is available in Europe.

There have to be some side effects.

Anti-smoking campaigns are really catching on. In 2007, more states banned smoking in public places, but we still have a long way to go. 21 states have passed comprehensive smoke-free air laws, but 18 others have not leaving millions of Americans exposed to potentially lethal secondhand smoke in public places. According to the American lung association tobacco remains the number one preventable cause of death in America. Diseases related to tobacco kill more than 438,000 Americans each year, but there's still too little federal and state funding for smoking-prevention and cessation programs, and many states have not increased their cigarette taxes. Health officials say more needs to be done.

The ovarian cancer vaccine is designed to re-educate patients' immune system cells and teach them to destroy cancerous ones. Many people have obesity surgery because they're literally at risk for dying. One disease that goes hand in hand with obesity is diabetes and now a new study proves yet again that treating obesity with surgery can correct diabetes. The report found that people who had surgery where the size of the stomach is reduced were five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years compared to those who had standard diabetes treatment. Most of the patients were able to stop taking their medication and developed normal blood sugar levels.

The diabetes from obesity is type-two diabetes. How is that different from type one?Type-two diabetes is often linked with obesity. We know that excess fat can wreak havoc with the insulin regulating hormones of the body. With type-two diabetes, your body becomes less sensitive to insulin. With type-one diabetes, there's a problem with the body's ability to make insulin. That's the one where you see people who are diagnosed usually at a young age and take insulin for life. All of the people in this study had type-two diabetes - that's the one that's associated with obesity.

You take your kids for their shots, but what about you? A new study finds not enough adults getting the vaccines they need. According to the CDC’s national immunization survey found that a little over 2% of adults 18 to 64 had been vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. And only about 2% of people 60 and over had received the new vaccine for shingles. 10% of women 18 to 26 have received the new human papillomavirus vaccine to protect against cervical cancer and among the elderly. Vaccinations against the flu and pneumococcal pneumonia are around 60% when it should be 90%.

Why aren't people getting vaccinated?

I've heard that the 80's are back, in fact, I've heard that reality TV is keeping them back, too. Bret came in to plug the second season of Rock of Love, and what a great reality show, too - I just can't NOT watch it... I know, I know, a double negative, but always a positive when one is dealing with a member of Poison.

A new British study finds that if you take birth control pills. You may be lowering your risk of ovarian cancer.

And researchers say the longer you stay on the pill the better. Taking the pill for 15 years cuts your risk in half, and better yet the benefit is long lasting - meaning that if you take the pill when you're young in you're twenties the benefit lasts well into your later years. When you're over 50, which is when ovarian cancer is more common.

According to a new survey the majority of parents have no idea how much salt is too much for themselves or their children. And they also didn't know that some traditionally sweet foods like breakfast cereal can be high in salt. Besides being linked to high blood pressure in some people less than a fifth of those surveyed realized that high salt consumption had been linked to osteoporosis and worsening asthma.

This study was performed in mice and found that two doses of influenza vaccine under the tongue of mice primed their immune systems to fight the flu. The next step is to try the vaccine in people.

You see them all over hospitals these days. Those alcohol based hand gels mounted on the wall.

Now researchers say hand gels alone may not be enough to curb infection in hospitals where germs lurk just about everywhere. In a Nebraska hospital, medical workers nearly doubled their use of the alcohol-based gels, but those cleaner hands did not affect the rate of infection among patients. This study contradicts guidelines from the centers for disease control and prevention that say better hand hygiene - through frequent washing or use of hand gels - has been shown to cut the spread of hospital infections.

Is there an explanation for all of this? The alcohol gels work, don't they?

Another study shoots down the theory that vaccines cause autism.

Researchers say the mercury that's found in a vaccine preservative is pumped out of a baby's body too quickly for it to do any damage. Vaccines used to contain a preservative called thimerosol, which contained ethyl mercury. Researchers say that form of mercury is handled differently in the body than the mercury you get from pollution or contaminated fish. The study reinforces what researchers have been saying for years and should help calm parents fears about vaccinating their children.

Do vaccines still have that preservative in them?
