1. FACT OR QUACK: Put vapor rub on feet to stop coughing
QUACK. And this should serve as a warning for people who get all their medical information from the internet. This rumor started when an email circulated that said the national research council of Canada did a study which found that applying Vicks vapor rub to your child's feet when they have a cough relieves the cough 100 percent of the time. The NRC claims they never conducted such research and claim the entire story is bogus.
2. FACT OR QUACK: Put onions in socks to lower a fever
VIDEO & MORE AFTER THE JUMP...
QUACK. Unless you're trying to make your feet smellier than they are putting onions in your socks has no effect. If you want to lower a fever the best thing to do is take some acetaminophen or ibuprofen. But remember fever isn't all bad. It's the body's natural way of fighting infection.
3. FACT OR QUACK: A shot of whiskey, lemon and honey cures a sore throat
FACT, but hold the whiskey. According to the national institutes of health lemon and honey are time tested natural remedies that can soothe a sore throat and relieve that annoying tickle especially when combined in warm liquids like tea. This works but only for mild sore throats. If your fever gets over 101, if you can't swallow your saliva or if you have swollen glands, you should call your doctor.
