Actor and former professional boxer Tony Danza is the host of the Versus reality series The Contender, which airs tonight at 10pm.

The Contender pits 16 cruiserweight boxers in a 12-episode competition. Going through the most intense training of their lives, only two will make it to the final to duke it out in the boxing ring for the title of Contender Champion.

This Brooklyn native is best known for his roles on 1980s series Who's The Boss? and Taxi. He made his Broadway debut in 2006 as Max Bialystock in The Producers.

I have known Tony for quite some time (I went to high school with his ex-wife, Tracy, and still friends with her today). I'm actually glad to see Tony getting back in to what he loves so much. For years, he was held back by circumstances, and his desire to make everyone happy. A case of "I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't". Back in Malibu 1986 (before he married Tracy), he was seeing another friend of mine who had strong ties to Brooklyn had always encouraged Tony to be true to himself, and follow his heart in career decisions. Through the years, I silently doubted that he had done that. I haven't talked to this other woman he had been seeing since she left Malibu in July 1986 to move back to the east coast (long story), but I bit the bullet and called her just before The Contender started. And while she really didn't want to speak to me, she stayed on the line just long enough for the show to begin, and for me to hear her crying with pride at how happy he looked. I watched it later that night as I still live in Malibu and I have to honestly say that I have NOT SEEN TONY THAT HAPPY IN YEARS! It took him almost 23 years to follow his heart in a career decision, but I know that the one he dated right before Tracy was just thrilled to tears to see him truly happy doing something that he has loved for years, but had forgotten just how much he loved the sport of boxing. Just too bad he didn't follow his heart with her as well (never too late, Tony) Anyway, I hope that this somehow gets passed onto him.
