The average family of four throws out nearly 122 pounds of food per month. However, many common perishables, including these staples, remain perfectly safe as long as a week (or even months!) past their sell-by date when stored properly, which is 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Always rely on your own senses-sight, smell, and touch-for signs of spoilage. The folks at Prevention say: When in doubt, throw it out!
Here with five foods that keep longer than you may think is executive editor of Prevention Magazine Courtenay Smith.
MILK
Longevity: 1 week past sell-by date
Freshness Tip: Hit the dairy aisle right before checking out to minimize the amount of time milk is left unrefrigerated, and store it on a shelf pushed far back, where the air is coldest. Closer to the fridge door tends to be warmer. And if it smells bad, it’s bad.

The New York Blood Center is pulling their bus up to PIX Plaza (42nd Street and 2nd Avenue) to collect blood donations this morning until 3:30pm. PIX's own Dr. Steve first spoke with Jim Fox, New York Blood Centerspokesperson. He'll later talk to William J. Mullaney, president of Institutional Business at MetLife and Matthew Long, a FDNY blood recipient who was hit by a bus on his way to work a few years ago and needed a transfusion.
Fox explained that to meet local needs, New York Blood Center and requires 2,000 blood donations each day to supply the needs of 200 hospitals. Approximately every two seconds, someone needs blood, and one out of three people will need a life-saving blood transfusion in their lifetime. In fact, a single blood donation can help save the lives of up to three people. Car accident and trauma victims need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions, cancer patients use large amounts of blood and burn victims can use up to 50 platelet transfusions.
You can join Dr. Steve and donate blood at PIX Plaza (42nd Street and 2nd Avenue) this morning until 3:30pm. People can donate blood every 56 days. Be sure to eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating. If you are donating platelets, do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin for at least 72 hours before your scheduled appointment.
And donations are always needed. Red blood cells must be used within 42 days, platelets within five days, and plasma can be frozen and used for up to one year. For more information on the New York Blood Center, log onto www.nybloodcenter.org.

Being pregnant and having diabetes increases the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth especially if women don't have their blood sugar under control. Their babies also have a higher chance of being born with birth defects.
Can they explain this trend?

Individually, the genetic variants play a minor role in the disease, but together they become more dangerous. This discovery could lead to a new test allowing doctors to identify several genetic variants at one time. Researchers say there's a very good reason for that. It appears that when we're scratched areas of the brain that are associated with pleasure turn on and areas associated with unpleasant emotions or memories turn off. Scratching is not recommended because too much scratching can damage your skin, but a little light scratching on the back or on the scalp can really feel good.

Researchers say the mercury that's found in a vaccine preservative is pumped out of a baby's body too quickly for it to do any damage. Researchers say that form of mercury is handled differently in the body than the mercury you get from pollution or contaminated fish. Most of the patients were able to stop taking their medication and developed normal blood sugar levels.
The diabetes from obesity is type-two diabetes. How is that different from type one?Type-two diabetes is often linked with obesity. We know that excess fat can wreak havoc with the insulin regulating hormones of the body. With type-two diabetes, your body becomes less sensitive to insulin. With type-one diabetes, there's a problem with the body's ability to make insulin. That's the one where you see people who are diagnosed usually at a young age and take insulin for life. 7:00am Segment Info:
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a nightmare wondering where did that come from? I'm a grown-up, I’m not supposed to get nightmares. Sleep experts say nightmares can be triggered by lots of different things like stress, medications, fear, anxiety, sleep disorders, or the recent loss of a loved one. Nightmares are pretty common, even in adults, and they often involve negative emotions. Whether or not a nightmare wakes you up has nothing to do with how serious it is.
Is there a way to prevent nightmares?
There's no guarantee, but there are some things you can do:

7:00am Segment Info:
Who needs a talk show, Rite Aid is now selling a paternity test that you can do at home.
A company called Sorenson genomics makes the test and it's being sold in California, Oregon and Washington. The test is sold under the brand name i-dent--gene. And costs about 30 dollars. Paternity tests are already available directly to consumers over the internet. This is the first time you can walk right into a store and purchase one. To use it you basically collect cheek samples from the child, father and mother and send it off. The results are provided by mail, fax or on a password-protected web site within five days of the laboratory receiving the samples. There is also an additional laboratory fee of about 120 dollars to have the sample analyzed.

Today Steve talked to us about anti-oxidants, PSA tests, and a new stem cell break through.\
7:00am Segment Info:
The PSA blood test is used to detect prostate cancer in men. PSA stands for prostate specific antigen - a protein that goes up when there's prostate trouble, but being overweight or obese can make that test somewhat unreliable. Now doctors think they know why. They say obese men have a larger blood volume, which dilutes the protein. Recent research has revealed that PSA levels are 20 percent to 25 percent lower in overweight and obese men than in men of normal weight. This finding explains why obese or overweight men tend to have lower PSA levels.
So should obese men not get the PSA test?

But this new study found the death rate for women ages 35 to 44 actually went up from 1997 to 2002 at 8.2 per 100,000 women. Overall, the death rate in women from heart disease is down thanks to preventive measures like cholesterol medications. But in this younger group it could be a sign of things to come.
Why the trend?

Today the doctor told us about oatmeal allergies that can cause eczema in children, baby aspirin & heart attacks, and a natural treatment for bad breath.
7:00am Segment Info:
Everyone knows taking a baby aspirin a day can help prevent heart attack and stroke, but it may work better for men than women.
According to a new report from Canada that examined 23 different studies on the subject, women with a low or average risk of heart attack may not need to take aspirin. They say, overall when compared with placebo, aspirin therapy provided a 28 percent reduction in the risk of non-fatal heart attacks, but did not reduce the risk of fatal heart attacks.
So should women stop taking aspirin to prevent heart attack?

Today, Dr. Steve told us about the link between asthma & being overweight, why cyrves may be very good, the viability of over-the-counter male enhancement & the connection between obesity and breast cancer, plus a few other valuable nuggets of health wisdom.
7:00am Segment Info: Viagra Knock-Offs & Obesity:
If you're like most people you've probably gotten an email spam marketing an herbal alternative to Viagra and other prescription medications that are supposed to enhance a man's performance. But experts say those medications could be dangerous. Especially for men with pre-existing heart and blood pressure problems who are taking medication because most of these herbal alternatives often contain exact copies of the patented drugs. Combining these herbs with their regular medications could lead to heart attack and even stroke.
Why are they allowed to be marketed to people?

We've been hearing a lot lately about MRSA the methicillin resistant staph bacteria that has become more common in our community. Now researchers say they've figured out why this particular strain of staph is so difficult to treat. A report in the journal nature finds that MRSA secretes a compound that causes the body's immune cells to explode wiping out a main defense in the immune system. Imagine trying to fight a war without soldiers. MRSA is taking out the soldiers before they can strike.

7:00am Segment Info: Laughter & Sleep
Sleep is so important for good health and these days it seems like there are more sleeping pills being marketed directly to consumers than ever before, but a good night's sleep doesn't have to come from a pill.
Studies show that for people with chronic insomnia sometimes some simple behavioral and psychological treatments work just as well and even better than medication without side effects. I know what you're saying.. They're too simple.. They're not going to work. But according to the American Journal of Psychiatry an analysis of 21 studies showed that behavioral treatment helped people fall asleep nearly nine minutes sooner than sleep drugs. And sleep therapy worked just as well as drugs, but without any side effects.

So which diet is the best?
I always say the best diet is one you can live with, so it's not a diet, but a lifestyle choice. Overall, diets that are low in saturated fat like south beach and the Ornish diets do lower cholesterol and benefit the heart while the Atkins diet caused LDL cholesterol - that's the bad cholesterol - to go up by about 7 percent. The numbers went down by about the same amount with south beach and Ornish diets. I personally recommend a Mediterranean diet that's low in saturated fat and involves eating mostly good fats, mono-unsaturated fat, whole grains low fat dairy and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Speaking of diets, how dangerous is it to be overweight?
